NSW: Moonlighting cops up 45 per cent in five years
25 Nov 2008 12:57 AMMore than 17-hundred New South Wales police officers are moonlighting asfuneral directors, actors and massage therapists .. with official approvalfor work outside the force almost doubling in five years.
Statistics show 17-hundred-and-22 police last year were allowed to take a second job .. or one out of every nine members of the police force.
The Daily Telegraph reports statistics obtained through a FOI request show this equates to a rise of 45 per cent in five years.
The most popular second jobs are as international couriers and fire fighters .. while some police are working as masseurs, photographers, security guards and actors.
The Police Association said officers were forced into second jobs because of poor pay.
Police officers wanting a second job must get the approval of Police Commissioner ANDREW SCIPIONE to make sure no conflict of interest exists.
The Telegraph says the force's 12 hour block rostering system .. which seesmany officers having six days off in a row .. has allowed moonlighting to flourish.
