CANBERRA, Nov 26 AAP - The federal government says it can't know how long the besieged Bangkok international airport will remain closed but trapped Australians are being helped.
Hundreds of travellers are stuck inside the Suvarnabhumi Airport as protesters dramatically ramp up their campaign to topple the Thai government.
Acting Foreign Minister Simon Crean says the duration of the closure is not known at this stage.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has warned Australians in Thailand there is a high threat of a terrorist attack amid the escalating political crisis.
The Australian embassy was maintaining close contact with local authorities, Mr Crean told parliament.
Consular officers were at Bangkok's international airport to assist Australians and liaise with the airlines.
Any increased threat to Australians in Thailand would be reflected in DFAT's travel advice, available from the government's Smart Traveller website www.smartraveller.gov.au.
