CANBERRA, Nov 29 AAP - The federal government's $800 million commitment to tackle homelessness has won the backing of a major welfare agency.
When combined with $400 million for social housing, there was a very real prospect a major assault would be made on the "scandalous" high number of homeless people, The Brotherhood of St Laurence said.
"Only the extremely churlish will fail to acknowledge that this is by far the most substantial commitment ever made to tackling homelessness in this nation," executive director Tony Nicholson said.
The commitment represented a massive turnaround in the commonwealth's contribution.
"The great challenge is to now ensure that these funds are allocated to best effect."
