MELBOURNE, Dec 1 AAP - Residents orf a street in Melbourne's north applauded on Sunday as police towed away three cars under Victoria's anti-hoon laws.

Police swooped on a roundabout at the intersection of Grand Boulevarde and Windrock Avenue in Craigieburn, where residents reported three cars - a Holden utility, a Holden Commodore sedan and a Ford Falcon sedan - were performing doughnuts and burnouts about 6.45pm (AEDT).

Officers seized the three cars, which they said belonged to probationary drivers, and arrested three men, all 18, of Craigieburn.

They will be charged on summons with traffic offences. Their cars will be held for 48 hours.

"As tow trucks arrived on the scene to remove the vehicles, nearby residents - sick and tired of local hoons - gathered to applaud the seizure of the cars," Victoria Police Glen Atwell said.
