Police in central west New South Wales are searching for a group of drunken louts believed responsible for torturing a possum.
The adult male brushtail possum was taken to a vet at Bathurst suffering burns to its face and neck and had to be put down.
A wildlife rescue volunteer says the louts stopped her rescuing the animal when she first tried to save it on November 18 at Bathurst's MacHattie Park .. and she had to go back with a Bathurst Council ranger to rescue it.
The offenders could face up to five years jail if charged with serious animal cruelty by police.
