MELBOURNE, Dec 6 AAP - Victoria Police nabbed 33 drink drivers during a traffic blitz in Melbourne's popular restaurant and pub districts.
A man in Clifton Hill recorded the highest alcohol reading of .131. Another man was charged with theft of a motor car, conduct endangering persons and evade police after he tried to flee a booze bus, also in Clifton Hill.
Drivers were also detected for unlicensed driving, using a mobile phone and general traffic offences.
Police tested 2,854 drivers at five booze bus sites in the popular restaurant and pub suburbs of Clifton Hill, Richmond, Burnley and Fitzroy between 9pm on Friday and 5am on Saturday morning.
The traffic blitz is part of Operation Raid, which is specifically timed to target motorists in the lead up to the busy holiday period.
Sergeant Graeme Kittle of Yarra TMU said drivers who did the wrong thing would be caught.
"We have already issued warnings to people that they would see more police and booze buses out, so it should come as no surprise that they get caught if they choose to do the wrong thing," he said.
