SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - A 27-year-old man was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious head injuries after he was attacked by a group of people south of Wollongong.
About 3.30am (AEDT) on Saturday morning, the man was walking with his girlfriend on the Princes Highway, Nowra, after leaving a party in Wongala Crescent, East Nowra.
Police allege the couple were approached by a group of about six people who verbally abused and intimated them.
The man was allegedly kicked and punched repeatedly after falling to the ground.
His girlfriend was helped by a passing motorist, who contacted police and ambulance officers.
The man was taken to St George Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition in intensive care.
A crime scene has been established and inquiries into the assault are continuing.
