NSW: Urgent review needed as police retiring in droves

The NSW auditor-general says experienced state police officers are retiring on medical grounds in droves .. putting front-line policing at risk.
PETER ACHTERSTRAAT says medical retirements have tripled since additional insurance benefits under the Death and Disability scheme were introduced in 2005.
His report's found 10 times more police officers are retiring on medical grounds in NSW than Victoria .. 445 of them on one year.
Mr ACHTERSTRAAT says some officers may be able to work elsewhere after they receive their lump sum payment.
