SYDNEY, Dec 13 AAP - Two police officers narrowly escaped injury when a drunken driver slammed into the back of their new patrol car in Sydney.
The officers were responding to a brawl at a hotel on Parramatta Road at Flemington, in Sydney's west, at 1.20am (AEDT) on Saturday.
They had been out of the vehicle for a about a minute when a white Mazda sedan hit the rear of their car, police said.
The driver of the sedan suffered minor facial injuries from the car's airbag inflating during the smash but the officers were uninjured.
A 27-year-old Villawood man allegedly tested positive in a roadside breath test before returning a blood alcohol reading of .095, almost twice the legal limit, at Auburn Police Station.
He was charged with mid-range drink driving, his licence was suspended and he was ordered to appear at Burwood Local Court on January 13.
The new police car was damaged beyond repair, police said.
