WELLINGTON, Dec 20 NZPA - New Zealand police are searching a Christchurch river for clues to the death prostitute Ngatai Lynette Manning.

The police dive team was conducting a grid search of the river in the area in which the 27-year-old's body was found on Friday morning.

Officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Inspector Greg Williams, said the search was to establish exactly where and at what time Ms Manning had entered the river.

He said there were obvious injuries and it was apparent the death was not from natural causes.

A kayaker found her body in the river near Dallington Terrace, east of the city centre, early on Friday morning.

Williams said police had a possible sighting of Manning, who was also known as Malorie, on Thursday night on the corner of Manchester and Peterborough streets and had executed a search warrant on a property.

"We are starting to build quite a good picture of her movements but we would still like assistance from the public if they have seen Ngatai or know anything about her movements on Thursday night," Williams said.
