20 Dec 2008 8:58 PM

SYDNEY, Dec 20 AAP - New South Wales has recorded its first road death for the holiday period, after a three-car pile-up killed at least one person in Sydney's south.

Three cars crashed just before the Woronora Bridge, on the eastern side, instantly killing one person and trapping others, police said.

The smash forced the closure of all eastbound and westbound lanes, causing major traffic delays, and two ambulance helicopters went to the scene, Macquarie Radio reported about 8pm (AEDT).

In a separate accident, six people were injured in a head-on collision on the NSW north coast about 7pm.

An ambulance spokesman said the accident happened at Ulmarra, near Grafton.

Two people were airlifted to Grafton Base Hospital, and the others were also expected to be taken to hospital.
