SYDNEY, Dec 21 AAP - A Sydney woman is in hospital after being shot by police when she attacked officers with a knife.
Police were called to an address on Iron St in North Parramatta at about 1.30am (AEDT) Sunday, with reports that the 48-year-old woman was threatening a man with a knife.
When they arrived, the officers were themselves threatened by the woman.
Police failed to subdue the woman with capsicum spray, and when she again attacked them, a female officer discharged a number of shots.
She has sustained what police called a serious injury, and is undergoing surgery at Westmead Hospital.
A 23-year-old man has also been treated for a cut to the neck.
A critical indecent investigation team is now looking investigating.
