CANBERRA, Dec 22 AAP - Former Guantanamo Bay prisoner David Hicks has no intention of travelling back to Afghanistan, his father says.
The convicted terrorism supporter will be able to apply for an Australian passport after a strict control order on him was lifted over the weekend.
"He's been there, he's seen what it's like, he's got no interest in going back there at all," Terry Hicks told Fairfax Radio Network on Monday.
"All David's interested in is the future and to get on with his life."
The control order had prevented Hicks from sharing his story about time spent in the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
Terry Hicks says his son wants to tell his story but added that it will be a long time before he is ready to.
"His confidence has got to be built up, his mental and physical side has to be looked at and addressed."
"He's got a lot of issues from Guantanamo that he's got to get through.
"It will happen but it will be a while yet."
