Vic: Man with knife in stand-off with police

MELBOURNE, Dec 29 AAP - A man armed with a knife has had a standoff with police in central Victoria.
Police were called to a house at Mt Clear near Ballarat early on Monday morning after reports the 25-year-old man was armed with a knife and threatening self-harm.
The man's mother who had been at the house went to a neighbour's house and called police.
The man was abusive and making threats when police arrived but they talked him into surrendering about 30 minutes later without incident.
The man was taken to hospital for a psychiatric assessment.
