Fed: Holiday road toll rises to 54

SYDNEY, Jan 1 AAP - The national holiday road toll has risen to 54 following the death of a man in the Northern Territory.

The 43-year-old man died when the car he was travelling in rolled east of Alice Springs on Thursday.

Police believe he lost control of the car, causing it to veer onto the wrong side of the Ross Highway near Emily and roll several times.

He died at the scene about 2pm (CST).

The fatality takes NT's holiday road toll to five.

Victoria continues to top the list with 16 deaths.

There have been 11 deaths in Queensland.

NSW and Western Australia have had 10 fatalities each.

There has been one death in both South Australia and Tasmania.

The Australian Capital Territory remains fatality free.
