SYDNEY, Jan 4 AAP - A young woman has fought off an attacker in south-west Sydney during an assault in which she was knocked unconscious, police say.

About 3am (AEDT) on Saturday the 22-year-old woman was walking to a friend's house at Ruse when she was attacked from behind.

The woman heard a voice near a Holden Commodore parked near the intersection of Paroo Street and Nymboida Crescent.

"Within seconds, she was struck in the face from behind," police said in a statement.

"She fell to the ground and blacked out momentarily.

"She has told police she regained consciousness to find a man indecently assaulting her.

"The woman put up a struggle and believes she injured her attacker, who fled the scene in the Commodore sedan."

The woman suffered swelling and bruising.

Police are seeking her attacker who is described as being Pacific Islander in appearance, with a medium build, and with rats tail hair.

At the time of the incident the man wore a white Nautica T-shirt and dark pants.
