NT: Cops attacked during brutal attack in Alice

A police officer in the Northern Territory has escaped being run over by his own police car .. after being attacked with rocks and beer bottles by a group of five people.
The officer approached the group on Old South Road in Alice Springs last night following reports of a disturbance.
The group's accused of turning on the officer and attacking him with a police baton .. beer bottles and rocks.
It's alleged they then got in the police car and attempted to run him down a number of times before speeding off.
The officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries .. while the stolen car was discovered about 190 kilometres south of the desert town.
Five people have been arrested and could be charged later today.
