NSW: P-plate street racers will have cars wheel clamped: Police

SYDNEY, Jan 11 AAP - Two P-platers caught street racing will have their cars' wheels clamped as part of a trial program to curb unsafe driving behaviour.

The two young males were unaware that two unmarked police vehicles were behind them when the allegedly took off from a set of traffic lights in Sydney's south-west.

Police allege that at 12.30am (AEDT) on Sunday the drivers sped off from an intersection at Liverpool and tried to overtake each other in parallel lanes.

Officers allege the drivers reached between 80 and 90km/h in a sign-posted 60km/h zone before they were pulled over.

The 17-year-old and the 19-year-old were charged with street racing and their cars were confiscated.

They are due to appear in Liverpool Local Court on 26 February.

Their vehicles have been earmarked for wheel-clamping outside their homes as part of trial program within the Liverpool local area command.
