Vic: Teen drowns at Melbourne beach

MELBOURNE, Jan 14 AAP - A teenage boy drowned at a Melbourne bayside beach on Wednesday.
The boy is believed to be 15 or 16 years-old and got into trouble while swimming with two friends at Edithvale just before 3.30pm (AEDT).
"The water was particularly choppy at the time and crowded," Victoria police spokeswoman Leading Senior Constable Kendra Jackson told AAP.
"He got into trouble 60-70 metres offshore, went under and his friends couldn't find him.
"He drifted north of the Edithvale Life Saving Club, about 200 to 300 metres.
"Another male swimmer dragged him out of the water and has given him CPR."
Ambulance paramedics could not revive him, Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Christine Paterson told AAP.
"Paramedics got there and CPR was in progress, they continued it but unfortunately he died," she said.
The beach was not patrolled at the time and is only patrolled by volunteer life guards on weekends, Life Saving Victorian spokesman Guy Britt said.
Edithvale is in Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne's south.
