SYDNEY, Jan 14 AAP - A teenage girl and a woman have been charged after a Sydney taxi driver was slashed across the neck with a knife.

The cabbie was travelling along Hickson Road at The Rocks with two female passengers about 12.45am (AEDT) on Wednesday when he was attacked, police said.

"When he stopped to drop them off, one of the females allegedly attacked the driver with a knife and cut him before the pair fled on foot," police said in a statement.

"The 42-year-old driver, from Hillsdale, sustained a laceration to his neck and was treated at the scene by ambulance officers."

Police arrested a 15-year-old girl and 35-year-old woman nearby a short time later.

The older woman, from Carramar in Sydney's west, has been charged with reckless wounding in company and being armed with intent to commit indictable offences.

She is due to face Sydney Central Local Court.

The 15-year-old Canley Heights girl has been charged with assault and will face Bidura Children's Court.

The taxi driver is in a stable condition.
