SYDNEY, Jan 15 AAP - A woman who drowned in a western NSW river died trying to save her teenage son who was struggling in the water.

Emergency crews were unable to revive the 46-year-old at the Macquarie River, south of Dubbo, at about 6.30pm (AEDT) on Wednesday, police said.

It is believed the woman and a 15-year-old girl entered the water near Butlers Falls to help her 19-year-old son, who had started to struggle while wading in the river.

The woman and her son were pulled from the river a short time later.

Paramedics were unable to revive her, while the man was taken to Dubbo Base Hospital and released after treatment.

The 15-year-old girl was able to swim to safety and was not injured.

"The river can be a dangerous spot, there are deep holes, there is debris that moves in the river from time to time, and it's about being aware of the dangers that the river can hold," police Inspector Mark Meredith told the ABC online.

Meanwhile, a toddler in Sydney has been rushed to hospital after an incident at an aquatic centre swimming pool, an ambulance spokeswoman says.

Paramedics were called to Cabramatta Avenue at Miller in Sydney's south-west at about 12.30pm (AEDT) on Thursday, where they collected a two-year-old girl who was conscious and breathing.

She was taken to Liverpool Hospital for further treatment in a stable condition.
