Vic: Two NSW teenagers arrested after two-hour, 200km police chase

18 Jan 2009 7:58 PM

MELBOURNE, Jan 18 AAP - Two NSW teenagers have been arrested after a police chase lasting two hours and about 200km in central Victoria.

Police tried to intercept an allegedly stolen black Ford Escape four-wheel drive on the Northern Highway at Heathcote, about 110km north of Melbourne, about 1.30pm (AEDT), but soon lost sight of it, a Victoria Police spokesman said.

About 30 minutes later the same car was seen travelling south on the same highway at speeds up to 160km/h.

Police gave chase on the road as a police helicopter tracked the car as it travelled towards Melbourne through the towns of Kilmore and Wallan.

The car swung north on the Hume Freeway until spike strips partially disabled it, bringing the pursuit to an end at Violet Town, about 170km north-east of Melbourne and about 200km after it began.

Two NSW boys, aged 14 and 15, have been arrested and are being questioned at Benalla.

Police say they have recovered "a number of items" thrown from the car during the chase.
