NSW: Off-duty cop more than three times blood alcohol limit

SYDNEY, Jan 27 AAP - An off-duty NSW police officer has had his licence suspended after allegedly being caught driving with a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.

About 11.30pm (AEDT) on Sunday, police were called to a crash between a car and a parked vehicle at Kiama Downs on the NSW south coast.

The driver of the car, a 33-year-old officer attached to the south west metropolitan region, was breath tested and allegedly returned a reading of 0.205.

His licence was suspended, he was charged with high-range drink driving and is due to face Kiama Local Court on March 19.

Meanwhile, police have also released the final figures from the Australia Day long weekend traffic operation, during which three people died on NSW roads.

On Saturday, a cyclist died after being hit by a truck on the M7 motorway at Eastern Creek in Sydney's west.

About 10.45pm (AEDT) Sunday a 29-year-old man died when the Magna sedan he was driving in Cambridge Park, also in Sydney's west, hit a tree.

A third man died about 7pm (AEDT) on Monday when his motorcycle ran off the road in regional NSW.

Between Friday and Tuesday police conducted 142,940 breath tests around the state with 416 motorists detected drink-driving.

There were 3,934 drivers issued with speeding infringement notices during the same period, when double demerit points were being issued for all speeding offences.
