ASIA: Two Iraqi election candidates shot dead

BAGHDAD, Jan 29 AFP - Two candidates who planned to stand in Saturday's provincial elections in Iraq were shot dead on Thursday, police and army officials said.

The first attack occurred in Baghdad, when armed men opened fire on Omar Faruq al-Ani, a candidate for the Iraqi Concord Front, the main Sunni group in the country's parliament, the officials told AFP.

The second victim was killed in the northern city of Mosul where he was also attacked by unidentified gunmen.

The police official said Hazim Salim Ahmed, a Sunni candidate for the Iraqi National Unity list was shot in the west of the city.
