BRISBANE, Jan 30 AAP - Bank ATM users in Brisbane have been warned to look out for card-skimming devices which could cost them dearly.

Police said a 27-year-old woman accessing an ATM at Mount Gravatt on Thursday night noticed a device.

The ill-fitting device, which had been mounted to the machine using tape, fell away from the machine as she tried to insert her card.

She immediately reported the incident to police.

Fraud squad Detective Superintendent Brian Hay said ATM users should be vigilant.

"Skimming is the process of using an electronic device to `skim' the person's details off the bank card," Det Supt Hay said.

"The device is usually mounted to the outside of the ATM and copies the details as the card is being placed into the machine.

"A camera is quite often also mounted to obtain the person's PIN detail."

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
