BRISBANE, Jan 31 AAP - A 19-year-old Sunshine Coast man has been charged after allegedly stealing alcohol from a Beerwah hotel and punching and spitting at a police officer trying to arrest him.
Police said the man punched the male officer several times in the head, head butted and spat on him, and attempted to gouge his eye out.
The man, from Dicky Beach, allegedly stole the alcohol from the hotel about 7.30pm (AEST) on Friday night, before returning to a nearby house.
But when police later tried to arrest him after viewing surveillance footage, he became violent, police said.
An officer was treated by the Queensland Ambulance Service for bruising and a cut lip.
Police have charged the man with one count of serious assault and one count of stealing.
He will appear in the Caloundra Magistrates Court on February 17.
