The nation's road toll last year was at its lowest level since 1949.
Figures released today show there were one thousand 463 people killed last year .. an 8.7 per cent drop on 2007 and the first major fall since 2003.
Federal Transport Minister ANTHONY ALBANESE says it's the lowest road toll in almost 60 years .. even though there are 11 times more cars on the road.
However .. Mr ALBANESE says four people are still dying on our roads every day .. and 247 of last year's fatalities were motorcyclists.
