SYDNEY, Feb 2 AAP - The latest attack on an automatic teller machine (ATM) caused extensive damage to a bank on the NSW south coast, but investigators are yet to determine whether any money was stolen.
Police were called to the bank on Cowper Street at Warrawong about 2.10am (AEDT) on Monday after reports of a possible explosion.
"The (ATM) and bank front were extensively damaged while surrounding businesses escaped the aftermath of the attack," police said in a statement.
Witnesses told police they saw four males running from the area into a nearby lane, before hearing a vehicle start and take off at high speed.
Bank staff and detectives are working together to determine if any money was stolen, police said.
The attack is the latest in a spate of ATM explosions across NSW and Queensland, which has prompted the formation of a special police task force and rewards of up to $150,000 for information leading to a conviction.
