WA: Man beats odds and technology in Kalgoorlie rescue
12 Feb 2009 3:17 PM
A badly injured man rescued from a secluded minesite near Kalgoorlie is lucky to be alive .. after activating an emergency distress beacon using the expired analogue radio frequency.
The man in his early 60s .. broke his hip and suffered internal injuries when he fell off a ladder at Bulong .. 30 kilometres east of Kalgoorlie.
Police say he lay injured for 27 hours .. and wouldn't have survived another day if his intermittent distress signal on the old analogue frequency hadn't been picked up by several planes flying overhead.
They gave his position to local police .. and the man's now in a critical but stable condition in Royal Perth Hospital.
