LONDON, Feb 19 AFP - British singer Dame Vera Lynn, a World War II icon through hits like The White Cliffs Of Dover, may take legal action after it emerged on Thursday that a far-right party is selling a CD featuring the song.

The British National Party, which wants to stop immigration but denies it is racist, is selling copies of a STG4.95 ($A11) compilation album featuring two Lynn songs to raise money for electioneering.

The 91-year-old singer's lawyer Nigel Angel said she was not consulted over the CD and is investigating what steps can be taken to end the association with her.

The BNP defended the sale, stressing the CD had not been produced by the party.

"I don't know why she is so upset," a party spokesman said. "We are not suggesting in any way that she supports us. It's just that many of our older members like to reminisce and like this type of music."

The BNP's online shop, Excalibur, sells a range of CDs including a collection of songs penned by party leader Nick Griffin on the Great White Records label, plus books with titles like The Immigration Invasion.
