NSW: Licence demerit points to be reduced for low-range speeding
02 Mar 2009 5:08 AM
Changes to the demerit points system will spare thousands of New South Wales motorists from the catastrophic loss of their drivers' licence.
The Daily Telegraph says licence demerit points will be slashed from three to one for low-range speeding offences up to 15 kilometres an hour over the limit .. under the changes to be announced by the NSW government today.
This follows revelations by the paper that motorists were losing their licences at a rate of 629 a day .. with the loss of demerit points accounting for almost 230-thousand suspensions in 2008.
Roads Minister MICHAEL DALEY says they're making it fairer for motorists caught driving just over the speed limit, without compromising road safety.
