The New South Wales government says an opposition plan to halve licence fees for people who go five years without committing a driving offence will be too costly.
Opposition Leader BARRY O'FARRELL announced on Saturday a coalition government would implement the scheme which has been in operation in Victoria since 2006.
Mr O'FARRELL says there needs to be incentives for drivers to obey the road rules .. not just punishments.
Roads Minister MICHAEL DALEY says while the plan has its good points .. it would cost the Roads and Traffic Authority somewhere between 80 million and 100 million dollars over four years.
But he says if there's a way it can be afforded .. the government may examine the proposal again in a year or two.
