NSW: Man and woman allegedly stole copper from abandonned house

SYDNEY, March 5 AAP - A man and a woman have been charged for stealing copper wiring from an abandoned house in Sydney, police say.

Police found a bucket of copper wiring after noticing a man and woman acting suspiciously on Dunlop Way, Minto, southwest Sydney, about 7.40pm (AEDT) on Wednesday.

The man and woman, both aged 24, were charged with trespassing, having goods in custody and possessing housebreaking implements.

They have been granted conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on March 25.

The alleged theft comes as the black market price for copper wiring has plunged in recent months in line with heavy falls in Australian commodity prices.

Last year police seized large stores of stolen copper in Victoria and NSW. The rise in theft was attributed to surging demand in India and China which has now abated.
