MELBOURNE, March 12 AAP - Four people have been injured, two critically, after a bus and four cars were involved in a crash at a Melbourne shopping centre.

Paul Bentley from Ambulance Victoria said two men, aged 35 and 19, were in a critical condition following the crash, which occurred shortly before 12.30pm (AEDT) on Thursday.

"Paramedics have placed both into induced comas and placed breathing tubes into their lungs to take over breathing," Mr Bentley said.

It is understood the incident occurred in a road leading into the Knox City Shopping Centre.

"Five vehicles were involved, a bus and four cars," said Victoria Police spokeswoman Sarah Campbell.

"It was in an access road to Knox Shopping Centre. It appears at this stage that the bus hit one vehicle which has careered into the others," she said.

The bus had only 10 people on board, none of whom were injured in the crash.

A 31-year-old woman and a baby thought to be inside the car with the two injured men sustained minor injuries, Mr Bentley said.

Traffic along the Burwood Highway is said to be chaotic, with the road partly blocked.

The police Major Collision Investigation Unit has been called to the scene.
