NSW: Explosive in bag found outside bikie's home

SYDNEY, March 31 AAP - Police are analysing the contents of a plastic bag believed to contain explosive material that was found outside a bikie's home in Sydney's west.
The bomb squad and specialist officers removed the plastic bag from the nature strip outside a home in Lisgar Street, Merrylands after police received an anonymous triple-0 call at 8.30pm (AEDT) on Monday.
Rosehill police Acting Superintendent Garry Simms said the full contents of the bag had been examined by the police.
"The item definitely had the appearance of an item capable of being exploded," Supt Simms told reporters.
"It didn't have the capability of being ignited on its own.
"It would have required further action to make that device explode."
Police believed there was explosive material within the device, he said.
"It definitely wasn't military ordnance, it was a home-made improvised device."
He would not confirm the incident was bikie gang related, despite saying a bikie club member from the home had outed himself to the media.
The president of the Parramatta chapter of the Bandidos bikie gang is understood to live at the Merrylands home.
"Not knowing the full circumstances of the gentleman's personal life it's far too early to start speculating on what the cause may be," he said.
Supt Simms said police had spoken to the man and confirmed he had installed CCTV cameras around the home.
Bomb squad officers had been able to remove the item without any problem and with no risk to the public, he said.
No one was evacuated, injured or arrested over the incident.
