L'AQUILA, Italy, April 6 AFP - At least 1,500 people were injured in the earthquake that struck central Italy, Italian Prime Silvio Berlusconi said, vowing that "no one will be abandoned to their fate".

There have been "1,500 injured so far", Berlusconi told a news conference in the quake's epicentre, the Abruzzo capital L'Aquila.

He was speaking shortly after emergency officials said the death toll had risen to 92.

"Among the victims are two students, including one from the Czech Republic," Berlusconi said.

"I want to say something important, no one will be abandoned to his fate," said Berlusconi, adding that a tent village was being set up that could accommodate between 16,000 and 20,000 people and would be ready by nightfall.

Some 50,000 people have been made homeless by the quake, emergency services said.
