Nationals Senate Leader BARNABY JOYCE says state governments are fast becoming irrelevant and could be abolished in the future.
Senator JOYCE has told the National Press Club today more and more affairs of our nation are run by the federal government and the nation's getting to a stage where it won't be able to afford three tiers of government.
He says the states are the ones that will be removed.
Senator JOYCE says the Senate also needs to be realigned to represent regions within the state rather than states themselves to make it more relevant.
