VIC: police shoot man with knife after capsicum spray fails

A shot of capsicum spray failed to subdue a man armed with a large knife tonight .. who was shot and wounded by a detective in a backyard in Melbourne's north.
The man .. about 50 .. is undergoing surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital following the shooting in Broadmeadows shortly before 6.00pm (AEST).
Victoria Police superintendent JACK BLAYNEY says police went to the house concerned about telephone calls from the man threatening self-harm.
The man .. who is known to police in relation to a current criminal matter .. was living in a bungalow behind the main house.
One of the three police were confronted by the man and used capsicum spray .. but the man continued threats with the knife .. and was shot when he continued to advance at one of the officers.
The man is in Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition with upper body injuries.
