MELBOURNE, May 19 AAP - Two urban developments in Melbourne are to be included in former US president Bill Clinton's Climate Positive Development Program.
The large-scale regeneration projects - in the central Melbourne Docklands precinct and in Officer, in the outer-east Shire of Cardinia - are aimed at tackling climate change by bringing jobs, services and transport into sustainable hubs.
Mr Clinton announced the program, which comprises 16 projects globally, at the C40 Large Cities Leadership Group summit in Seoul, Korea, on Tuesday.
Developer VicUrban will deliver the two projects in Melbourne in partnership with Lend Lease.
VicUrban chief executive Pru Sanderson said the projects would help to make Melbourne more resilient to the effects of climate change.
"President Clinton's announcement recognises the significant climate change benefits that can be achieved from an integrated approach to the planning of jobs, services and housing in high quality urban growth and renewal projects," she said in a statement."
In Officer, a town offering 6,000 jobs and homes for 15,000 people will be built, while at Victoria Harbour in Docklands, 30 hectares of brownfield development land will be home to a mix of residential, business and recreational spaces for up to 30,000 people.
It is estimated nearly one million people will live and work in Climate Positive communities around the world located in Brazil, Canada, India, Panama, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, UK and US.
