US stocks bounce higher as unemployment in focus

US stocks have headed higher as investors digest a mixed weekly jobless claims report for signs of recovery from recession ahead of Friday's July unemployment data.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 28.87 points (0.31 per cent) to 9,309.84 in opening trades.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 4.23 points (0.21 per cent) to 1,997.28.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 3.89 points (0.39 per cent) to 1,006.61.
Analysts said Wall Street was on tenterhooks awaiting the Labour Department's report on unemployment and payrolls .. for clues on the strength of stabilisation in the long recession.
