SLEEPING DOGS
or The Conversation Killers
by Nick Patey
Ethyl: He was always such a quiet boy. You wouldn't have even known he was in the house. Never said a word. Up with the crows. Early to bed. Always kept to himself. Who'd have thought?
Vivien: He was a funny boy wasn't he? I mean, the (his?) mother was a strange one wasn't she?
Ethyl: He and his Dad never got on.
Vivien: In love with the same woman.
Ethyl: He was a hard one to pick the father. Smile at you one day and stare through you the next. He liked a drink didn't he?
Vivien: He and his sister shared a bed for years. Asking for it if you ask me.
Ethyl: Funny how he turned himself in. There were no witnesses. He could have got away with it you know.
Vivien: Not in this town. No one gets away with any funny business here. There's always someone up to someone up to something somewhere.
Ethyl: She's a working girl the sister, isn't she?
Vivien: That's why he might have done it. To spare her.
Ethyl: Couldn't help himself. Poor bugger.
Vivien: Never should have done away with the death penalty. Hanging’s too good for that sort of thing. Not even then.
Ethyl: They'll sort him out inside, don't you worry about that. Spanner in the eye if he's lucky.
